Abstract: It is estimated that 1 in every 44 children (Prevention, Autism Spectrum Disorder) fall within the spectrum for autism disorder in Nepal. Despite these startling number, autism is minimally discussed in Architectural Design codes and Guidelines. The incidence of Down Syndrome in live births is approximately 1 in 700. This research is based on designing “Center for people of Intellectual Disability (Autism and Down Syndrome)” for children with autism and down syndrome based on their behavior and sensory architecture. Autism is not a single disorder but a spectrum of closely related disorders, therefore it is important to understand the process for the treatment and better the living condition of persons with autism. It is characterized by repetitive behavior, limited communication skill, challenges in social interaction which may be result of a malfunction in sensory perception. Down syndrome (DS), also known as Trisomy 21, is the most frequent chromosomal aberration associated with mild to moderate mental disability, a characteristic facial appearance, and poor muscle tone in infancy. This thesis presents a design proposal for an autism and down syndrome center that aims to serves as a resource center for kids with autism and down syndrome with facilities for schooling, therapy, vocational training for children between the ages of 3 and 21 with moderate levels. The facility is a type of Hospice center for children with autism and down syndrome that offers a sensory environment as well as amenities and training for their betterment. The main objective of this project is to design a platform for sharing of information regarding autism and down syndrome through interaction and develop mental and social skills. The children need peaceful environment with few residences for interaction. So, I have chosen the site at Chundevi-1, Bhaktapur for my thesis, titled “Center for Intellectual Disability (Autism and Down Syndrome)”.
