Abstract: | This thesis presents a vision for a pilgrimage center at Barahakshetra, a sacred site in eastern Nepal deeply rooted in mythology, spirituality, and cultural traditions. The design aims to enrich the pilgrims experience by weaving together sacred narratives, natural surroundings, and local customsparticularly the Dhami Jhankri practicesinto a unified architectural expression. Through a comprehensive methodology involving site analysis, ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and comparative studies of similar pilgrimage destinations, the thesis explores how intangible spiritual values can be meaningfully translated into spatial experiences, resulting in what is termed a "Sacredscape." The research focuses on understanding the nature of sacred landscapes, observing pilgrim behavior, and preserving cultural narratives through thoughtful architectural interventions. It documents the existing spatial conditions of Barahakshetra, identifies gaps in infrastructure, and examines user movement and patterns. Comparative analysis offers insights into the spatial organization and symbolic elements that define other successful pilgrimage centers. Guided by these findings, the design proposal incorporates site-sensitive planning, spiritual symbolism, and material choices that resonate with the local context. |
