Abstract

The thesis explores the architectural design of a Classical Dance Academy that serves as both a center for dance education and a platform for cultural preservation. The project stems from the recognition of the inadequacy of existing dance facilities in Nepal, which often lack proper spatial, acoustic, and material qualities necessary for dance instruction and performance. The study examines the diverse cultural and classical dance traditions of Nepal and integrates this understanding into a contemporary architectural language that supports various dance form's from traditional to modern. By incorporating principles of movement-sensitive planning, sustainable design, and cultural symbolism, the proposed academy offers spaces that are acoustically treated, spatially adaptable, and emotionally resonant. The design includes purpose-built studios, rehearsal halls, performance spaces (indoor and outdoor), and educational facilities, all arranged to enhance user experience, creativity, and interaction. Case studies and literature reviews support the design framework, while material choices and spatial compositions reflect the rhythm and dynamism of dance itself. This research demonstrates how architecture can meaningfully engage with performing arts, not just by serving as a venue, but by transforming into a medium that echoes the rhythm and essence of dance and culture, offering both indoor and outdoor spaces for performance.
