Abstract: | This thesis explores the design of training spaces dedicated to Newari rhythm and movements, focusing on how architecture can support the preservation and transmission of intangible cultural heritage. ????? is a traditional Newari term referring to a communal space where cultural music, dance and various socio-cultural activities are performed. These spaces are integral to the communitys social fabrics, reflecting and preserving the rich heritage of the area. The aim is to create a spatial framework that fosters the practice, performance, and teaching of traditional Newari music and dance forms. The content of the thesis is structured around an investigation of Newari performance practices, spatial hierarchies in traditional settlements, and the role of built form in shaping cultural experience. The design responds to three core spatial categories: public performance zones, semi-private practice spaces, and private introspective areas for advanced training. The resulting design emphasizes rhythm through spatial sequencing, material texture, and acoustical quality, aligning bodily movement with the built environment. The proposed training center not only provides functional spaces for practice and performance but also embodies the cultural rhythms it seeks to support. The final design stands as a prototype for how traditional knowledge systems can be meaningfully integrated into contemporary architectural practice, contributing to both cultural continuity and community empowerment. |
